Melasma Treatment in Merchant City, Glasgow
Melasma is the most common form of facial pigmentation which results from several factors such as UV exposure, genetics, post-pregnancy and hormonal changes. Melasma typically presents as patchy pigmentation on areas of the face – most commonly on the upper lip, cheeks, the under eye area and forehead.
Melasma is very common amongst pregnant women due to hormonal imbalances. This is known as the ‘The Mask of Pregnancy’ and can also be called chloasma. A similar situation arises in patients taking the contraceptive pill.
Patients with melasma find that their pigmentation intensity gets greater in the summertime as the greater UV exposure causes pigment darkening.
Ever Clinic in Glasgow is the only clinic in the UK to own and use the PicoPlus from Lutronic. We use this cutting-edge, medical-grade laser to treat melasma and skin discolouration. Due to the ultra-short pulse width afforded by this “pico-laser”, the PicoPlus laser is suitable for all skin types and complexions. Treatment helps to reduce and maintain the level of pigmentation but must be used in conjunction with ongoing care. Other elements may be required, depending on the individual situation. But strict photoprotection, including vigilant SPF, is critical!
The PicoPlus laser targets ultra-short, “picosecond” pulses of laser light at the problem patches of pigmentation. These pulses, via a photomechanical effect, fragment the unwanted melanin into minute particles which the body then removes.
The ultimate effect is general skin lightening and removal of dark spots.
PicoPlus is one of the only lasers that can be used safely and effectively in the treatment and maintenance of melasma.
PicoPlus skin pigmentation removal is suitable for:
• Sunspots / Age Spots
• Melasma (Dermal and Epidermal)
• Freckles and cafe-au-lait macules (CALMs).
• Naevus of Ota / Nevus of Ito
• Tattoo removal/reduction
Our professional team of experts provide individualised treatment plans tailored to your skin type and condition. Enjoy safe and effective melasma laser treatment with no downtime!
FAQ’s About Melasma
How Does the PicoPlus Focus Laser Work?
Based on your initial consultation your treating Doctor will set the laser to the appropriate settings for your skin. Laser light is then fired into the area of skin discolouration. The picosecond pulses shatter the unwanted melanin accumulations into minute particles – these are naturally removed by the body’s immune system, leaving clearer, lighter and firmer looking skin.
Do I need an initial consultation?
Yes, as with all our treatments an initial consultation is required. Specifics about your health, any medications, and an assessment informs a recommended treatment plan. This may include a patch test, where a small area is treated prior to treatment of the larger area of concern. In some situations, treatment may not be advised – if this is the case, a full explanation will be given.
Are there any side-effects to the PicoPlus treatment?
Immediately after receiving a treatment it is common to experience redness and slight swelling that diminishes rapidly in the following 24-48 hours.
You will experience temporary discolouration on the treated area which will flake and fall off over the following two weeks revealing lighter skin.
Is it painful?
Everyone has a different pain threshold and reacts to treatments in their own way but the PicoPlus laser treatments usually create minimal pain. Most patients rate the pain level at around 1/10.
How many treatments do I need for the PicoPlus Laser?
Unfortunately with Melasma as it can be an on going condition. We can not confirm how many sessions will be needed and how long the results will last. Most patients with superficial Melasma can have three sessions with a great result and regular top ups whereas some patients with deeper Melasma may need 6-12 sessions plus supporting products to minimise it.
